Do not misuse the Other type

The Other assay type is not to be used as a lazy alternative to register an assay without providing the necessary domain-specific information. It is solely meant to describe either very simple assays or other not yet supported domain-specific ones.

When your assay belongs to one of the already supported types, do use the appropriate type. The additional information is required when depositing your data to a public repository, so record it as soon as possible.

Assay types are grouped by Domain

When you pick an assay type from the data loader, the available types are grouped by Domain (e.g. Sequencing, Light Microscopy, Electron Microscopy, X-Ray, Proteomics, Metabolomics, Other). Domains make the list easier to scan and reflect the scientific area the assay belongs to.

Assay type selector in the data loader — types are grouped by Domain.

Missing an assay type?

New assay types are added by admins (see Add a new Assay Type). Each new type is assigned a Domain, which controls where it appears in the picker.

Assays consume specific sample types

The sample model aims at describing how a biological sample was obtained from its original specimen (conditions, etc.). A base Sample model is provided to capture elementary sample information. In addition, we've designed domain-specific sample types, which aim - when necessary - at capturing the additional bits of information.

Domain-specific samples allow to record technology-specific information mandatory when publishing to public repositories

Certain scientific domain (sequencing, microscopy) require recording at a finer grain information about how a sample was obtained. This information often follows international standards, and has to be handed out when submitting the data to public repositories.

To enforce the proper recording of the information, assays restrict the sample type they accept:

  • Sequencing

    Sequencing Library

  • Light Microscopy (LM)

    Base sample

  • Electron Microscopy (EM)

    Electron Microscopy (EM) Sample

Support of other platform and technologies

We are aware of the other platform and technologies heavily used in life science. We do want to further develop the current offer to support also:

  • Proteomics
  • Metabolomics
  • Flow Cytometry

We are also looking into how to better support multi-omics assays.

Each integration of a new technology and/or platform takes time. One of the most important aspect is to develop specifications that make sense on a bigger scale. This usually involves collaboration with specialists in their field who help us grasping the different aspect and specificities of a cutting-edge technology.
